Morning Prayer with the Oblate Family: Friday July 1st With Fr Dominik OMI
Good morning friends, today we join Fr Dominik of Our Lady of the Wayside parish, Dublin.
Bishop Oliver Plunkett was born in County Meath in 1625. Later, he was elected as the Archbishop of Armagh and primate of All Ireland in 1668. At that time, when the country was in a state of civil and religious disorder after the interventions Oliver Cromwell, he persevered for ten years in his effort to help this state of affairs, until the discovery of a non-existent plot against the English government, which gave the authorities an excuse to act against many prominent Catholics.
At that time, when the priests and religious had to hide, despite the danger he went to visit his uncle, who was dying. Bishop Plunkett was arrested in Ireland but taken to London for trial after which he was hanged at Tyburn.
His remains are preserved at Downside Abbey, together with such other relics as the notes for his defence at his trial; on the occasion of his canonization in 1975 his casket was opened and some parts of his body given to the cathedral at Drogheda in Ireland.
Bishop Oliver Plunkett is remembered today for his great love towards God, the Church and his kindness towards everyone – even those who didn’t share his faith and convictions. He is known for his pastoral zeal and for the friendly relations he established with those who did not have the same interest in the Catholic religion.
May we, after his example, ponder how to treat other with respect and courtesy. With staying devout to our faith may we also do something practical to make the Church grow, may we bring Christ to others.
Thank you for joining, and have a blessed day!
Praised be Jesus Christ,
And Mary Immaculate.
