Feast of the Immaculate Conception – 8th December 2019

To mark this official Feast Day of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, two Oblate Missionaries will visit your parish community from 7-8th. December. They will share with us their own vocation story, speak about their lives and mission and promote vocations to the priesthood and Religious life. In preparation for this, we ask that you please pray for all Oblate Missionaries, those who serve our parish and those who are living and sharing the Good News of the Gospel in some of the poorest and most demanding situations and conditions around the world today.

The Oblate Tradition Preaching Missions

When St. Eugene deMazenod began the Missionary Oblates of Mary he realised that he needed to and could reach those who were suffering because of the French Revolution through preaching parish missions. Through these missions the first Oblates encouraged, supported and challenged people with the Good News of the Gospel. Eugene took as the motto for the Oblates these words from Jesus; I have been sent to proclaim the Good News to the Poor.

Eugene wasn’t interested in intellectual arguments or ideas, he wanted to touch the hearts of people, not just their heads! He wrote in 1818: ‘To aim at elegance of style rather than to solidity of doctrine would directly against the spirt of our rule.. Our one and only aim should be to instruct people and break the Word for them…

Our current Oblate Rule tells us that ‘We are a missionary Congregation; our principle service in the church is to proclaim Christ and his Kingdom to the most abandoned. We preach the Gospel… and help people to see their own values in light of the gospel.’

In proclaiming the Word, it is our tradition to be simple and direct and to speak a language adapted to and easily understood by those who hear us. In all our ministry but especially in that of reconciliation, we will reflect the understanding, the patience and compassion of the Saviour.

As Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it is our deepest prayer and hope that when we proclaim the Good News of the Gospel, people will hear the words and voice of Jesus speaking directly to them.
