We join Ros Appleby in Birkenhead, England, as she reflects on the gospel reading of today’s mass.

How can I be perfect when God alone is perfect? The Rich Young Man comes to Jesus, seeking a deeper relationship with God. Though, faithful to God’s commandments as he was, the young man is disturbed and saddened by Jesus’ instructions to part with his wealth. It seemed too much. When God calls us, it can make us uncomfortable, reaching out into the unknown and into unfamiliar territory…

Jesus said, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go and sell what you own and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’
