Gospel Reflection for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 26th – Follow the leader
In last Sunday’s gospel, Jesus told his disciples and us that was going to be put to death and to be raised on the third day. In the gospel for this Sunday, this is made very clear again, as Jesus resolutely took the road to Jerusalem, the place of his passion and resurrection. But even Jesus did want to travel this road alone. He invited his friends, followers and those who heard him with these simple but deeply challenging words “Follow me.” But those who heard this invitation were not a resolute as Jesus was. Each of them had very valid and convincing reasons (or excuses) for not going with him.
Following Jesus is not easy. It requires faith, courage and conviction. Accepting the invitation to follow Jesus requires much more than just walking with him from town to town. Following Jesus means living our faith and putting it into practise in our daily lives. Following Jesus and being his disciple calls each of us to be resolute in our decision to journey with him to Jerusalem – and beyond.
Our initial decision to follow Jesus often needs to be revisited and reaffirmed. It is never just a once off yes! But let us not lose heart when we grow tired on this pilgrimage with Jesus and each other. For just as we promise to walk with Jesus, he also promises to walk with us to encourage and strengthen us.
Let us find comfort, courage and hope in these words from Jesus, ‘Come to me, all you who are labour and are overburdened.’, and I will give you rest. As Jesus asks us to take up our cross and follow him, He walks by our side and helps us to carry our cross. When you hear Jesus calling you with these words, ‘Follow me,’ what is your response today?
