Bee8 – We’ve been buzzing to tell you how we celebrated world Earth Day. Our pollinating friends in the gardens at Mary Immaculate in Dublin
Our pollinating friends in the gardens at Mary Immaculate in Dublin have been working away with gardener Aisling O’Connor and the team at Bee8 in keeping the grounds looking superb.
During Aprils update the Bee8 team shared how Earth Day is always a special day as it’s around now when the flowers, trees and plants come to life and burst with colour; a celebration of nature’s beauty. Within beekeeping, Earth Day is advocating for positive changes to all constructed environments. Prioritising environmental sustainability will create a healthier habitat for humans by helping pollinators – like bees – and their ecosystems.
In the Mary Immaculate gardens, we are proud to house 4 colonies within the gardens. Observing them as we headed into spring, we are pleased to say everything is looking healthy and positive As the weather gets warmer the Bee8 team will be able to commence hive inspections to check-in in on our broods and their queens.
Spring is a critical time for beekeepers in creating the best habitat for the bees to thrive within. This requires making sure the hive has enough room for the expanding colonies, preventing the risk of swarming. “Swarming” is when a group of bees leave their hive and the old queens to establish a new colony.
Here at the Oblates, we have been lucky so far because the dedicated Bee8 team have been keeping a close eye on the hives and adding superstructures (extra boxes) to the hives to allow space for growth.
