About Lourdes and the Oblate Connection
The Oblate Community has a long connection with the Shrine of Our Lady in Lourdes, a small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in the South West of France.
In 1859, on the 11th of February, Bernadette, a 14 year old girl from the village of Lourdes, was the only witness of an apparition, whom she called “Aquero” – meaning, ‘the Lady’. The Lady identified herself as “The Immaculate Conception” which confirmed that she was in fact, Mary, the mother of Jesus. The message of Lourdes is one that went around the world – one of peace, healing and hope. Millions of pilgrims have flocked to Lourdes since then, seeking that peace, healing and hope.
The Oblates of this province (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) whose founder, St Eugene de Mazenod was from Marseilles, France, and where our congregation had its origins, organised the first ever English speaking pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1863 and have traveled there every year since, with the exception of the war years and during the Covid pandemic.
Send in your intentions to be brought to Lourdes on February 11th
We celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Lourdes on the 11th of February and for the nine days prior to that, we will have a special time of prayer each day for all of your intentions.
Our Lady of Lourdes is patroness of the sick, so, in a particular way, we invite you to join us praying for those who are experiencing ill health of mind, spirit or body. You may send in your prayer intentions to us.
Send your prayer intentions to lourdes@oblates.ie by February 7th– we will bring them to Our Lady’s Grotto in Lourdes for the Feast Day on February 11th.
If you would like us to light a candle at the Lourdes Grotto for you or a loved one: go to oblates.ie/mission-shop/ or call Barbara on 01 4541816

Novena Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes
You are the All Beautiful, O Mary! The Word of God was made flesh in You. Help us to remain in attentive listening to the voice of the Lord: may the cry of the poor not leave us indifferent, may the suffering of the sick and of those in need not find us distracted, may the loneliness of the elderly and the fragility of children move us, may every human life be always loved and venerated by us all. Amen Hail Mary… Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us, St. Bernadette, pray us. St Eugene de Mazenod, pray for us. O Mary, conceived without sin, |
